Many planners consider "strategic" to be symbolic of "long-term". Executives enjoy severe strategic planning because it is recommended pure fantasy. Consultants like to do long term planning exercises since they make everyone feel educated. Yet long planning horizons are the part of visions and strategies in which are too motherhood to help to successfully executed. According to Peter Wright just for the Planning Group "when we take executive teams through an exercise to make a 2-3 year practical sight, they are visibly stressed. If they commit to qualify for the vision of the activity only 8-12 quarters far away from, real plans will wish to be underway within a few months just to be on track. "
This sense of urgency is best reason to keep office horizons short. Bridging the between strategy and execution is difficult, and a vision which can both practical and compelling is best foundation. A vision should drive the articulation of organization's most crucial choice, its "strategic imperatives", maybe solid plan for things to do achieve those priorities. Becoming that short, practical vision, turning strategy into action 's nearly impossible.
There is one important caveat: strategic preliminary prep work, in particular vision statements really do not have a horizon which can too short. A vision for an organization which reaches just 12 months away, of course, is likely unrealistic, and can cause a sense hopelessness. This can be much like damaging to successful execution somewhat vision that is so very long.
There is a place for superior level, longer term strategic vision to a great firm, but don't let it be an alternative choice to a practical vision and strategy that can be the drivers of mankinds action. Keep your business you go horizon between 2-3 years in order to complete plans that are reasonable, compelling, and stand a fighting risk of execution.
