When we first visited this earth it was important to feed ourselves each morning, not get eaten together with the local saber tooth ruffie and, more importantly, grow the population in a lot. Life was simple, eat or be eaten. This only required the opportunity to understand each separate event and have a quick way to handle the event. Figure out how to hunt and enjoy by ouselves. There was no need to appreciate the larger magical powers at work or have the ability connect events.

Life, however, has become more tough and our survival has come dependent on understanding gradual processes just like global warming, a slow abatement in sales, a growing obesity problem in the US, a loss of business. Each is caused because of a complex array of magical powers and events that come together causing even more really hard outcomes and effects. We know we cannot expect to keep track of all these events therefore we select a few which help sense and focus for it. Does business have the device right?

We usually choose to know our lives in terms of events. Board meetings in companies are dominated by what to do about last quarters sales, a new product the competition seems to have launched, how to finance the brand deal, etc. Each happens to be an event that we think a new single solution. We seek single approaches to single problems. We find how the latest creation that the competition launched is uncomfortable our sales. We find that bad employee relations resulted in a low morale which back again again affects design quality together with final product that we start to sell to our customers.

As long as we sign up for one single reason for each problem we will never get to the bottom of your problems. As long when we finally fight fires, concentrate on operations and disregard the big picture we never can see any improvement in the modern business.

Learning is never sustained within decide on a has managers focused on short run events. By focusing in front of events managers, at cleverest, become predictive so together with react optimally.
